Job description

A Retail Manager is the captain of the store. They are responsible for everything that happens within the four walls of a retail location from driving sales and managing budgets to hiring, training, and motivating the team.

Ultimately, their job is to balance operational efficiency with an excellent customer experience to maximize profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development: Recruiting, training, coaching, and scheduling staff. A great manager builds a positive team culture and identifies future leaders.
  • Sales & Financial Performance: Monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) like average basket size, conversion rates, and labor spend. They analyze sales data to meet or exceed revenue targets.
  • Operations & Compliance: Overseeing inventory management (stock levels, shrinkage, and audits), ensuring the store is clean and safe, and handling daily cash reconciliation.
  • Customer Experience: Resolving complex customer issues, ensuring the team delivers excellent service, and maintaining visual merchandising standards so the store looks inviting.

Core Skills Required

  • Leadership & Interpersonal Skills: The ability to inspire a team, deliver constructive feedback, and handle conflict calmly.
  • Business Acumen: Understanding profit and loss statement (P&L) statements, budgeting, and how local market trends affect sales.
  • Problem-Solving: Retail moves fast. Managers need to think on their feet when a system goes down, a shipment is late, or the store is short-staffed.
  • Organization: Juggling schedules, corporate compliance, inventory, and floor management requires serious time-management skills.

Typical Work Environment

  • On Your Feet: This is rarely a desk job. Retail managers spend most of their shift on the sales floor, interacting with customers and staff.
  • Flexible Hours: Retail doesn't keep a 9-to-5 schedule. Expect to work evenings, weekends, and major holidays, as these are peak shopping times.

Job requirements

  1. Experience: 3+ years of retail management or supervisory experience, preferably in a high-volume retail environment.
  2. Education: High school diploma or GED required; a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or a related field is a plus.
  3. Technical Skills: Proficiency with Point of Sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  4. Physical Demands: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day) and lift up to 40 lbs.
  5. Availability: Flexible schedule, including the ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs dictate.
