Job description
- Develop environment LookDev, color scripts, and matte paintings that define the mood and artistic direction of cinematic scenes.
- Combine 2D photo-bashing, digital painting, and 3D assets to build complex, high-detail environments from concept to final shot asset.
- Prepare matte paintings for projection, splitting layers correctly (foreground, midground, background) for the Compositing team.
- Work alongside the Art Director and VFX Supervisor to translate rough ideas into polished, photorealistic or stylized backdrops.
- Maintain a high standard of visual execution across different environment styles (natural landscapes, urban sci-fi, period pieces).
Job requirements
- Solid understanding of composition, color theory, light falloff, and spatial depth.
- Proficiency in Photoshop combined with 3D workflows (Blender, Maya, or Unreal Engine) for environment blocking and lighting bases.
- Familiarity with Nuke for basic projection testing and layer output preparation.
- Ability to work across multiple visual styles, ranging from hyper-photorealistic film environments to stylized animation backdrops.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset when working across Art and VFX departments.
Portfolio Requirements
- Selection of high-quality environment matte paintings and LookDev concepts showing mood and lighting variations.
- Process breakdowns illustrating the pipeline from 3D block-out / rough sketch to photo-bashing and final polish.
- Clear visual proof of layer separation and projection readiness.
- Link to an organized online portfolio or demo reel (ArtStation, Vimeo, personal website).
